The Ones: WTM DaeMoney’s “10:17 PM”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

WTM DaeMoney - “10:17 PM”

WTM DaeMoney is a college-age rapper from Detroit who chronicles his everyday life in his music: stealing a fraternity member’s girlfriend, scamming department stores, and getting lectured by his dad. The up-and-comer typically tells these stories over piano-heavy instrumentals like “10:17 PM,” the intro to his new mixtape, out today. Similar to his mentor Babyface Ray, DaeMoney focuses on reflective vignettes, with fewer of the punchy non-sequiturs that are Detroit’s go-to style. “Pops told me slow down, you need to be patient/I ain’t never been the type to sit down and be waitin’,” he says, rapping at a leisurely pace, like he’s telling you a story during a long walk through his college campus. (Evidently, he listened to his dad’s advice about patience.) In the grind of Detroit, rappers tend to emerge once they’re older and more seasoned. But with his sharp storytelling and lethargic flow, DaeMoney seems likely to secure a spot in hip-hop’s most competitive scene.
