The Ones: Spillage Village’s “Hapi” [ft. Big Rube]

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Spillage Village - “Hapi” [ft. Big Rube]

“Hapi” is an epic exploration of circumstance, purpose, and hope, performed by half of Spillage Village, a collective of hyper-talented musicians established in Atlanta in the early 2010s. Though most of the vocalists are Dreamville affiliates, the song sounds more Elton John than J. Cole. Its rapping and singing coalesce around a bold piano line, before giving way to a twangy guitar. Mereba offers sweet-voiced thoughts on money and autonomy; EARTHGANG’s Johnny Venus opts for soulful yelps, leaving the speedy bars to Spill Vill newcomer Benji. Big Rube, a member of a more storied collective—Atlanta’s historic Dungeon Family—rounds out the track with his trademark poetry, declaring, “Your freedom is beyond anyone outside of yourself’s controllin’.”
