The Ones: Shawny Binladen’s “TBC/TBG”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Shawny Binladen - “TBC/TBG”

Shawny Binladen has dropped four music videos for new songs this week—they’re all good. On “Slime Talk/Kickdoor,” the Woodhull, Queens rapper glides over a pair of frenetic beats; “Motion” is a fiery back-and-forth with Melly Migo, and his whispery flow shines on “Echoes.” “TBC/TBG,” the one I’ve been going back to the most, displays Shawny’s nightmarish delivery on both halves. Nobody else in New York raps at such a breezy pace with vocals this grimy; this is probably due to his deep in Queens location. Since he’s removed from other rap scenes popping up around the city, he doesn’t make drill or sing or rap on soul samples. Shawny is creating something entirely on his own, and his recent prolificness elevates it.
