The Ones: Roddy Ricch’s “Start wit Me” [ft. Gunna]

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Roddy Ricch - “Start wit Me” [ft. Gunna]

The signature bounce of Jetsonmade’s productions have helped propel DaBaby to fame and others are already seeking out the formula. Compton rapper Roddy Ricch is one such artist: “Start wit Me,” his new song with Gunna, sounds like he asked specifically for a “DaBaby Type Beat,” and the results are nearly as scintillating. The single, from an upcoming album called Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, is full of warning shots for anyone threatening to step to the duo. The two melody-first rappers are on opposite ends of the spectrum—Ricch is an invigorated performer and Gunna is a drowsy one—but they find enough common ground to work well together. Roddy Ricch tweaks cliches just enough to stay unpredictable and Gunna comes through with some straight talk, but it’s Jetsonmade’s flute lines and caroming drums that elevate the song. With “Start wit Me,” Roddy Ricch gets what he paid for.
