The Ones: Roc Marciano’s “Richard Gear”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Roc Marciano - “Richard Gear”

Roc Marciano is his own genre. The Long Island native is a professional shit-talker who hops on soulful self-produced instrumentals like “Richard Gear,” a standout from his new album out today, to speak in metaphors that’ll make you do a double take: “Ass so fat she had me trippin’ like tryna’ stick Rod Strickland,” he somehow says confidently. It’s a bar approved by the uncle at the dinner table who tells lies about how he was a five-star basketball recruit before tearing his meniscus. But unlike your uncle, Roc Marciano isn’t an unreliable narrator; I’m convinced he really does live the life of the protagonist in a Martin Scorsese mob movie. I love hearing him describe his day-to-day activities: he enters Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse by walking through the kitchen and winds up making out with somebody’s girlfriend in a booth. So don’t blame me if this winter I speak in bible quotes and purchase a pair of Nike ACG Boots—black, of course. I’m just embracing the Roc Marciano experience.
