The Ones: Rio Da Yung OG and RMC Mike’s “PoundTown”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Rio Da Yung OG and RMC Mike - “PoundTown”

Flint rappers are indistinguishable from stand-up comics at times, and on “PoundTown,” Rio Da Yung OG and RMC Mike’s humorous flows combine with producer Sav’s dissonant piano loops to create something I call the Michigan special. Sav’s one of the few beat architects building Flint’s sound, and he’s completely in his element here. Over his production, Rio continues the tried and tested motif of rappers finding excuses to not start relationships when he says, “I just can’t see myself with you bae/I’m kinda blind.” There’s no hook here, instead Rio and Mike prefer to flood the track with one liners, and their chemistry is as good as ever. Together, the two make it clear that Flint’s the capital of punchline rap.
