The Ones: Kill Em All’s “Force Majeure”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Kill Em All - “Force Majeure”

Mach-Hommy and DJ Muggs are Kill Em All. Let’s be grateful that it didn’t take the newfound duo long to realize that they’re a perfect pairing. In the last two years, DJ Muggs has experienced a career rebirth through a series of concise collaborative projects and he continues to be one of the few that can rein in Mach-Hommy—the New Jersey-bred Haitian rapper often has so many ideas that it’s overwhelming.

It’s easy to get lost listening to a Mach-Hommy verse; even three or four consecutive spins doesn’t make his language any less dense. But the abstractness of Mach is part of his appeal, and it’s no surprise that his influences range from Ramellzee to Basquiat. On “Force Majeure,” Mach’s approach is hardly consistent, but it’s part of the experience to attempt—and usually fail—to keep pace with him. Some lines are short and direct, others are a sudden barrage of run-on sentences. But over Muggs’ dirty underground dwelling drums and bright, jazzy keys Mach’s words sound magical.
