The Ones: Dretti Franks’ “So Frigid”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Dretti Franks - “So Frigid”

The spirit of DJ Screw lives in the music of Dretti Franks, a producer and rapper from Beaumont, Texas. His newest mixtape, Manga Wrld, is composed of chopped and screwed G-funk productions that wouldn’t sound out of place on Chapter 57 - Wineberry Over Gold. Franks’ bars are as low-key as the melodies and snares that form their background, and they serve to complement the mood rather than to display his lyrical prowess. On “So Frigid, ” a stand out from the mixtape, his lines are littered with references to Southern rap legends (“I’m coming out hard like I’m MJG & 8Ball” and “Popping my collar like I’m Juicy J and Paul”). Over an icy backdrop of trunk-rattling bass and melodic synth phrases, Franks displays a deep knowledge and love of Southern hip hop. His mastery of these elements allows him to create a song that sounds as smooth and hypnotizing as the work of his predecessors.
