The Ones: Doja Cat’s “Rules”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Doja Cat - “Rules”

Memes may have launched Doja Cat into the spotlight, but her music is what has kept her there. Only a couple of months removed from her bouncy, Tyga-assisted, “Juicy,” the L.A. rapper cements her knack for singles with “Rules.” The Western-themed video for “Rules” has the usual theatrics we’ve come to expect from a Doja Cat video, though the song itself is more simple, in the vain of Kendrick the way she whispers, chants, and speeds up her flow all within a couple of seconds. And even if she is influenced by the Compton rapper, like many are, lyrically she’s completely her own: “Said play with my pussy/But don’t play with my emotions,” says Doja on the catchy hook.
