The Ones: Dee Aura’s “You Wish”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Dee Aura - “You Wish”

Some albums just sound made to forever be sampled. I felt this way with The Weeknd’s House of Balloons, Sampha’s Process, and now moody California singer Giveon’s Take Time. Thankfully Dee Aura has noticed this, too. In the last month or so, the Queens rapper has spit over flips of Giveon’s “The Beach” on “Can’t Cry No More” and “Vanish” on “You Wish,” two of his best songs to date. “You Wish” is the one I keep going back to. Dee is patient with the beat: He lets the pitched-down sample ride for nearly 40 seconds before he enters with a choppy flow and raps about a day in his life like he can hardly remember it. But it’s less about what he’s saying and more about how gracefully Dee Aura’s flow is enveloped into the cloudy atmosphere of Giveon’s vocals.
