The Ones: Chicken P’s “Off My Chest”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Chicken P - “Off My Chest”

In the last year, Milwaukee has slowly emerged from Detroit’s shadow to become one of hip-hop’s most promising cities. Take “Off My Chest,” the latest single from the Chicken P, formerly known as Lil Chicken. On the track, he rattles off quick, reflective stories about drug dealing. These memories may focus on small moments—cooking dope when his mom wasn’t home, his dad finding his cash, and selling while his friends were in school—but don’t get it twisted, his grand one-liners, delivered like run-on sentences, can go toe-to-toe with even Detroit’s best. “Don’t call me coppin’ pleas, call Jesus, heard he save niggas,” raps Chicken. Whenever Chicken P, one of the best rappers in the Midwest, drops a slab of piano-heavy street talk, Milwaukee comes closer to fully escaping Detroit’s formidable reach.
