The Ones: Baby Plug’s “Float On”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Baby Plug - “Float On”

Remember when Kid Cudi was running around with MGMT and Ratatat or when Childish Gambino was rapping on Grizzly Bear? When I think about that time, I wake up in my sleep like a character in a horror movie, and I hope that era of hip-hop never returns. But I’m not going to lie to you, I was playing the hell out of Lupe Fiasco’s Modest Mouse-sampling “The Show Goes On,” so it only makes sense that I appreciate Atlanta’s Baby Plug doing the same. On “Float On,” Baby Plug hops on a RX Brainstorm-produced flip of the titular Modest Mouse song to croon like the Thug disciple that he is. “I had to do a little wrong just to get right,” he raps, never having to say much to be mesmerizing. Let’s hope he doesn’t decide to rap on Grizzly Bear next.
