The Ones: Baby 9eno’s “UUV”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Baby 9eno - “UUV”

It’s easy to tell that Baby 9eno’s “UUV” is a Maryland rap song. His punchlines sound like they were delivered through a grimace, and the sinister low piano notes feel like they were made to score a classic horror movie. By taking that regional sound and expanding it without abandoning the core elements (another layer of keys is added on top of the traditional set), the song becomes something more. “Ain’t no eye for eye, bitch it’s hell on earth/Better hope for the best and prepare for the worst,” raps 9eno, elevating straightforward bars with his vibrato. Baby 9eno’s rise through the Maryland rap ranks is built on these subtle differences.
