The Ones: Amaarae’s “Leave Me Alone”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Amaarae - “Leave Me Alone”

Amaarae’s music makes me miss sweaty nights on the dancefloor. Since her 2017 debut, Passionfruit Summers, the Ghanian American singer has sprinkled her bright touch on some of West Africa’s best pop music (see: Santi’s “Rapid Fire” and Odunsi’s “Body Count). “Leave Me Alone,” the first single from her upcoming EP, The Angel You Don’t Know, would be worth sweating through my finest outfit. Her melodies are mango-sweet, the dancehall rhythm is a DJ-set cheat code, and her lyrics feel both personal and universal: “Too much energy being wasted, too much time/Too many enemies form friendship, flooding my lines up,” she sings. Though the dancefloors may have to wait, that’s not going to stop Amaarae.
