With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
38kea - “Fortified”
38kea’s flow is somewhere between speaking and rapping, and this ambiguous style fits the odd textures of his music—slowed-down percussion surrounded by noise. On “Fortified,” the Richmond, Virginia rapper’s stream of consciousness is backed up by what sounds like a distorted AM radio station playing a skipping country rock record. Combined with 38kea’s fragmented phrasing (“We’d been family since we hopped on the bus/Got the powers in my hands and my blood/I’m charging you up”), the haze creates a dreamlike space where nothing is as it first seems. It’s not for everyone, but whose dreams are?
