Justine Skye is a fashion girl through and through, but even she won't wear white most of the time.

"I'm still a little bit nervous to wear white," Skye tells PEOPLE exclusively at Friday's Kate Spade New York presentation during New York Fashion Week. "I feel like I'm a little bit clumsy, so I feel like people who wear all-white outfits have to be very mature — that's not me! One little mark on it and then the whole thing is ruined."

Skye, 28, pointed to a few of the new white looks in Kate Spade New York's collection as pieces she aspires to have in her own wardrobe if she was feeling daring enough to go for it, but she says she's more likely to lean toward the colors.

At the end of the day, though, as a native New Yorker, black is her comfort zone.

"The whole like idea of being from New York is it's easy to get ready to go, wearing black and not worrying about getting anything on it," she says, alluding to how easy it easy to get your clothes dirty while traipsing around the city.

She didn't opt for an all-black look on Friday, however. She picked a custom blue tweed-set and white knee-high stockings with white knee-highs and kitten heels. Like Fashion Week so often is, her outfit was a bit last minute, and she says it was a race against the clock to get dressed and make it to the presentation. Such a race, in fact, that she nearly didn't make it into her outfit.

"I'm literally sewn into the outfit," the "Collide" singer says with a laugh. "We were doing alterations on this like 20 minutes ago."

In the end, it came together, and she insists everything was fine — including the kitten heels that she says made her feel "cute" even though they're something she has only newly come to like.

"They give you a little bit more height and make you feel more feminine," she says. "I used to be a sneaker girl, boot girl, and now I want to elevate my style, so I've entered a new phase of being a woman, being an artist, and my fashion sense is going that way too."

Skye even admits that she used to make fun of her friends who wore kitten heels, because she just didn't get it.

"I was like, 'What are those?'" she says with a laugh. "And now I'm like, 'Okay, they're cute, I get it.'"
