Mansfield police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened about 1:30 p.m. Thursday on West Fourth Street near the entrance of North Lake Park.

Richland County Coroner's Investigator Bob Ball identified the deceased as Nathan Carroll, 18, address unknown. Ball said Carroll was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body will be taken for autopsy.

A second person who was shot was transferred to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. Both suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Mansfield assistant police Chief Jason Bammann said.

Bammann said it appears both victims were shot while inside a gray Chevy Malibu.

The city's 911 communications center received reports of gunshots and also a crash, Bammann said.

The News Journal received recordings of the calls through a public records request. A female caller to 911 said she was at North Lake Park and had an emergency, but didn't know what was going on.

"Somebody ran. There was some gunshots. There was a person lying here. I think they're dying," the caller told a dispatcher. She said she thought a person was lying in front of North Lake Park entrance.

"This car was driving. You heard gunshots. And this person is laying out. I'm walking down right now," she said.

The caller said there were a lot of people at the scene. She and a person in the background said the victim was a male.

Another caller said there was a car crash and a man just got in a car and took off. She described a four-door gray vehicle being driven toward the Galloping Goose Drive Thru.

A third caller said someone got into a car wreck but she heard gunshots outside North Lake Park.

"There was a dude who took off. My uncle was trying to go and catch him," she said. She told the 911 operator to get someone out there as the man was barely breathing.

A fourth 911 caller, a man, reported a medical situation. He said there was a man on Fourth Street.

"He's on the north side of the highway a little bit west of Western Avenue near the park entrance and it appears a car had run over him," the caller said. "There's some guy out here screaming for help. I just happened to be coming by so I'm phoning it in."
