In 2023, Carolyn Bessette remained a bit of an enigma, even after her death. While people have adored her fashion for decades, and have picked apart her different looks for inspiration, not many know about the person behind the iconic style. Most people know the basics: John F. Kennedy Jr’s wife, former PR executive, and a free-spirited woman who wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is. However, many still want to know who she really was, and one of her friends has detailed exactly what kind of person, specifically what kind of friend, she was throughout her life.

One of Bessette’s closest confidantes throughout the last decade of her life, Carole Radizwell, wrote in her memoir What Remains that Bessette was the mom friend that everyone needed, especially during those crazy days at Calvin Klein.

“One of her responsibilities at the shows is to manage the models,” she wrote. “They are constantly, it seems, in crisis. She is mother to them all, calm and ready with answers.”

We love that this glimpse shows us that Bessette was the mom friend, both on and off work, and it’s not the only account detailing Bessette’s friendship type.

Back in the early 2020s, financial analyst Mary Taylor became an expert on all things Bessette, and detailed to People that “She had a big personality, was very creative and, by all accounts, a very loyal friend. More than being a super cool person fashion wise, she was a goodhearted person and I wanted to honor her legacy. A lot of people still care.”
