Grammy-nominated singer Omar Apollo revealed the release date for his upcoming album God Said No — as well as some very special guests who will appear alongside him, including The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal.

Apollo posted the album cover and tracklist to Instagram on Wednesday, announcing that his sophomore LP will drop on June 28. “This album is a reflection of my life for the past 2 years and I’m happy to finally present it to you,” he wrote. The album’s first single, “Dispose of Me,” will be released on Thursday at noon Eastern time.

Music magazine Rolling Stone subsequently reported that the album will feature Sudanese-Canadian poet and singer Mustafa as well as Emmy-nominated actor Pedro Pascal. Though the tracklist Apollo posted doesn’t specify which song Pascal will be featured on, one of the album’s tracks is indeed titled “Pedro.”

In April, as Apollo was finishing this highly personal follow-up to his 2022 debut album Ivory, he told Rolling Stone that the project was influenced by Kate Bush, Giorgio Moroder, Labi Siffre, Jeff Buckley, Lana Del Rey, and Beyoncé.

And he likes to do it from the back.

“The album doesn’t feel like it’s a bunch of songs put together,” he said. “It’s a sequence that is made to be listened to front to back. That’s what I love about it. The songs, the writing, the narrative, everything about it is just from someone who has progressed in music. You can just tell.”

Apollo said that the album’s title, God Said No, is a play on the Spanish phrase, “Lo que será, será,” meaning “what will be, will be,” and references something a friend said to him while getting through a breakup. Additionally, Omar hinted that one house-infused song will chronicle the end of a relationship.

“[Grief is] such a complex feeling because you could feel grief for someone who’s passed away or grief for someone you have heartbreak over,” Apollo told Rolling Stone. “That song, in particular, is one of my favorites on the album. I took my time and was trying to give an imagery and a feeling, and a temperature and a light. Even the writing is kind of psychedelic.”

Apollo was nominated for the best new artist Grammy in 2023 after the release of Ivory. God Said No will make its way into our eardrums just in time for an emotional climax to Pride Month.
