Oliver Hudson's 'Happy Abandonment Day' Post Leads to Rapprochement With Estranged Biological Father

Who knew a nasty Instagram post would lead to a sweet reconciliation? Not Oliver Hudson.

The Scream Queens actor says that the headline-making “Happy Abandonment Day” post that he put on Instagram in June was a (very chilly) icebreaker for him and his biological father, musician Bill Hudson. The men spoke for the first time in 12 years and “might be mending something.”

During an appearance on Tuesday’s Watch What Happens Live, Bravo’s Andy Cohen asked Oliver, 39, if he regretted the post. “No, and I’ll tell you why,” Goldie Hawn’s son said. “It actually started a dialogue. I haven’t talked to my father in 12 years. In my sort of dark, crazy sense of humor, I posted this ‘Happy Abandonment Day’ thing, which, you know, everyone went crazy about. I was just trying to be funny. At the end of the day it was a good thing. We’re communicating now. I had an amazing three-hour conversation with him. We’re texting and we’re trying to see each other. We might be mending something.”

Cohen followed by saying, “Maybe your sister will get in on the action,” referring to his younger sister, Kate Hudson. “We’ll see,” Oliver replied. “We’ll see.”

On Father’s Day, Oliver posted an old photo of himself, Kate, and Bill along with the “abandonment” comment. Bill, who was married to Hawn from 1976 to 1980, was so furious about it that he publicly disowned his children.

“I had five birth children and I now consider myself a father of three,” the Hudson Brothers musician told the Daily Mail. “I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name. They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate.”

It sounds like no name changes will be necessary now that they are making inroads.
