Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson won’t play again after suffering a torn PCL in his right knee during the Rebels’ loss to LSU on Saturday night.

Patterson injured his knee in the first half of the game and was replaced by backup Jordan Ta’amu. Patterson briefly returned to the game but he was clearly hobbled.

A highly touted member of the class of 2016, Patterson was Ole Miss’ undisputed starter heading into the season. As with most young quarterbacks, he’s shown flashes of brilliance in 2017 along with a propensity to make some mistakes. He finishes the season 166-260 passing for 2,259 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Saturday night’s game vs. LSU was his second three-interception game of the season.

Patterson started the final three games of the season for Ole Miss in 2016 as a freshman when Chad Kelly went down with a knee injury. The first start of his career was a win over Texas A&M but the Rebels went on to lose to Vanderbilt and Mississippi State to end the season.

Ta’amu takes over as Ole Miss’ quarterback in Patterson’s absence. Ole Miss coach Matt Luke said he was confident in his backup in the hours after the Rebels’ 40-24 loss Saturday night. From Rivals’ Rebel Grove:

“I’m very confident (in Ta’amu moving forward),” Luke said. “He showed some flashes tonight and did some things with his legs. I was impressed with him throwing the ball tonight. He led us on two scoring drives and that gave him some valuable experience.”

Ole Miss, 3-4, faces a reeling Arkansas team on Oct. 28.
