Oklahoma native Olivia Munn announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy last year.

Munn said she kept the diagnosis and surgeries private, needing to catch her breath and get through it all before sharing.

"I'm so thankful to my friends and family for loving me through this," Munn wrote in a lengthy social media post. "I'm so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect."

Munn also thanked everyone at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and Saint John's in Santa Monica, as well as her surgical oncologist Dr. Armando Giuliano, her reconstructive surgeon Dr. Jay Orringer and her oncologist Dr. Monica Mita.

How did Olivia Munn find out she had breast cancer?

In her Instagram post, Munn said her OBGYN, Dr. Thais Aliabadi, saved her life.

In the winter of 2023, Munn received normal mammogram results and even tested negative for the most well-known breast cancer gene in February 2023.

But her doctor decided to calculate her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score, discovering her lifetime risk was at 37%. This led to the discovery of an aggressive, fast-moving cancer, Luminal B cancer, in both breasts.

Munn underwent a double mastectomy 30 days later.

"I'm lucky," Munn said. "We caught it with enough time that I had options. I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day."

Munn encouraged all women to ask their doctors to calculate their Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score.
