At long last, the official trailer for Meryl Streep and Emma Watson’s Little Women has arrived! And make no mistake, the star-studded teaser will make you even more excited about the latest adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic. Of course, Streep (Aunt March) and Watson (Meg) aren’t the only big draw in Greta Gerwig’s take on the familial tale — the trailer also gives glimpses of how Laura Dern (Marmee), Saoirse Ronan (Jo), Florence Pugh (Amy), Eliza Scanlen (Beth) and Timothée Chalamet (Laurie) will bring their characters to life.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Dern touched on how ahead of its time Alcott’s treasured novel was and just how fitting it is for today. “Re-reading it now for the film, it’s so radical and so incredibly modern,” said Dern, with Ronan adding, “The story [is] so relevant now to the confidence that women have in themselves and taking their own path.”

Ronan should certainly know, as her incarnation of Jo fills the trailer with an inspiring blend of moxie and feminist gumption. “Women have minds and they have souls, as well as just hearts. They’ve got ambition and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it,” Jo laments in one scene.

Of course, the characters are in good hands with Greta Gerwig at the helm. When asked by EW about introducing the trailer, the director explained, “We wanted [the trailer] to feel like the movie feels, which is both classical and fresh. We wanted it to feel light on its feet. And even though it does take place in the 19th century, we in no way wanted it to feel like it was something that was past. We wanted it to feel like it was present right now.” She also noted that she wanted the trailer to capture the dichotomy of family and individuality that makes Little Women so special. “I wanted it to be both — this is the collective experience and also these are the individual journeys,” she said. “I think that’s what I love [about] the story and I think that’s what generations of readers have loved about the story.”

It undoubtedly helps when the actors playing these characters are so fully capable of bringing tiny nuances to the screen — and it isn’t lost on Gerwig how fortunate she is to be working with such a talented group. “It’s such an embarrassment of riches,” she said of the cast. And, well, we’re inclined to agree.

The film comes out on Christmas Day and, after seeing this trailer, we can all agree it might just be the best gift any of us get this year, right?
