It's official: lawmakers declare 2023 the "Taylor Swift Era" in Pennsylvania

Sometimes, Pennsylvania lawmakers will dedicate a day, or a week even, in honor of an outstanding Pennsylvanian.

Rarely though, has the body dedicated an entire calendar year to someone.

But it is now official: 2023 belonged to Taylor Swift, so voted Pennsylvania lawmakers who passed a resolution honoring the west Reading native and pop music megastar.

2023 officially the 'Taylor Swift Era' in Pennsylvania

More than a half dozen Pennsylvania lawmakers signed on to the resolution, which they adopted on Dec. 13 — Taylor Swift's birthday.

"Recognizing the year 2023 as the 'Taylor Swift Era' in Pennsylvania, in celebration of Ms. Swift's recent selection as TIME Magazine's 2023 Person of the Year and acknowledgment of her positive impact on Pennsylvania's economy, voter registration numbers, consumer protections and pro-labor practices," read a portion of the resolution. "And whereas, through talent, hard work and determination, Ms. Swift has transcended the role of pop star, becoming a veritable cultural and economic force.

"And whereas, Ms. Swift shines as a role model of courage, self-acceptance and self-determination, persisting in the face of personal and professional obstacles and challenges."

On top of lifting the economy with tour stops in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania lawmakers also credited Swift for donating proceeds to hunger relief organizations and encouraged thousands of people to register to vote, particularly young people.

Pennsylvania resolution recognizes Taylor Swift's economic impact, social involvement

The resolution notes that Swift "transcended the role of pop star, becoming a veritable cultural and economic force," and that her "New Eras"tour revitalized the economies where the tour stopped.

"The Federal Reserve credited Ms. Swift with boosting local economies, including raising hotel revenues in Philadelphia to the highest point since the pandemic," read the resolution. "A study by Architectural Digest credits the Eras Tour with a measurable increase in home values to cities on the tour, including a 4% increase in Pittsburgh."

The frenzy for tickets to Taylor Swift's tour prompted legislative action to address Ticketmaster’s shortcomings.

That was Swift's 32nd concert in her home state and took place just across the street from one of the first major venues where she performed.

Then in June, Swift performed twice at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

House Resolution 282 was introduced Wednesday night to the chamber and passed with 103 yes votes and 100 nays. It was introduced by Representatives Danielle Friel Otten, Jennifer O'Mara, Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, Robert Freeman, Benjamin V. Sanchez, Arvind Venkat, Jose Giral and Maureen E. Madden.

Swift adds the resolution to a long list of accomplishments this year, including being named the most-played artist globally on Spotify. And she’s helmed the first tour to gross more than $1 billion and then the highest-grossing concert film of all time.
