The Office Spinoff Series Officially Announced For Peacock

Everybody loves The Office, NBC’s flagship mockumentary sitcom from the mid-2000s, but it hasn’t been on TV for over a decade. Other sitcoms have come and gone in that time, but none have quite had the impact that The Office did — and that could all be about to change, as The Office is officially getting a spinoff.

As reported by THR, Peacock has announced that it has ordered a currently untitled The Office spinoff, which is set to start production in July. The new series will be set in the same universe as The Office, and will see the in-universe documentary team that once followed paper company Dunder Mifflin starting a new documentary project at a new failing business — a regional newspaper.

Here’s how Universal Television and Peacock describe the new series:

“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”

The new series will be headed up by Greg Daniels, who produced The Office, Parks and Recreation, Space Force, and many more. Also involved in the project is Michael Koman, who spent almost a decade writing for Late Night with Conan O’Brien before co-creating Nathan For You.

Daniels previously said no to the notion of a The Office reboot, saying that he’d “never want to redo the same show with a different cast.” He also said that he would be interested in overseeing a “sister show” set in the same universe, likening the concept to The Mandalorian and Star Wars’ expanded universe.

Lisa Katz, president of NBCUniversal Entertainment, says that the new series will feature a “new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling” — which suggests we probably won’t be seeing many, if any, of the characters from The Office showing up in the new series. Still, it’s certainly not off the table entirely, especially as Michael Koman is married to Ellie Kemper, who portrayed Erin in the original series, and Greg Daniels has worked with many other The Office stars since the show ended.

No release date has been set for the new series, but it will be available on Peacock in the US.
