“The Office”'s Angela Kinsey says she objected to a joke that used faith to be 'super judge-y'

Kinsey says she asked showrunner Greg Daniels to axe a joke in the show's "Gay Witch Hunt" episode.

Angela Kinsey says she objected to a joke on The Office that she felt was too "one note" and "super judge-y."

Kinsey, who played the uptight and devout Angela, discussed that moment on costar Rainn Wilson's Soul Boom podcast. "There were one or two times in which there would be a joke written for her that I thought was just really stereotypical, maybe one note," she said. "I like to think of her as a full, well-rounded person."

Kinsey may have been able to see the full picture around Angela because she was raised in a "warm, meaningful relationship" with her faith, she told Wilson.

"I remember there was a particular storyline between Angela and Oscar, where Angela was being super judge-y," she recalled. "I never went up to [producer and showrunner] Greg [Daniels] about any joke, but there was a joke at Oscar’s expense, and I went up to Greg and I was like, ‘I can’t.'”

The line had Angela using Jesus as a reason to judge Oscar, a gay coworker played by Oscar Nuñez. “I just was like, ‘I don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel good about that. I don’t feel like that’s what Jesus represented to me,'” she told the showrunner.

She continued, “He was like, ‘Okay.’ And he heard me, and he took the joke out. And the episode, it was ‘Gay Witch Hunt,’ had so many already. But that’s the one pivotal moment I remember being like, okay, this is feeling like a stereotype and very one note. I feel like she has more depth than that."

Kinsey and Wilson's reunion is just one of many that have occurred recently, including a commercial and a team-up between Steve Carell and John Krasinski in the upcoming film IF. There's an appetite to see the show's stars together again, and Daniels hopes there's also an appetite for a new show.

Entertainment Weekly reported earlier in April that the reboot made its first two hires: Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore. However, EW also learned that the project isn't being discussed as a reboot or revival, precisely. It's a new series with new characters working in a new office that exists in the same universe as Michael Scott's beloved Scranton.
