A 19-year-old Oakland man has been charged in connection with the killing of a 73-year-old woman in a hit-and-run last summer.

Christopher Perez is accused of killing grandmother Santu Maya after crashing into the victim as she crossed the street with her family in Oakland on the evening of June 16, according to authorities, per The Mercury News and KTVU FOX 2 at the time.

The suspect was charged in January with one felony count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident, court records revealed, The Mercury News reported on Tuesday.

The records reportedly state that Perez pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on Feb. 15. He was released on a $95,000 bail under the requirement of wearing a GPS ankle monitor.

Maya had immigrated to the U.S. to the San Francisco Bay Area from Thailand four months before her death.

The grandmother had been going for her daily walk before dinner at Foothill Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue in Oakland when Perez crashed into her on a crosswalk while driving a Mercedes-Benz. The victim’s daughter and 10-year-old granddaughter were present at the time of the crash.

"It's really painful," the victim's daughter tearfully told KTVU FOX 2 San Francisco following the incident in June. "So please help me to make justice for my mom. I want that."

Perez was later identified as a suspect in the crash after being caught on surveillance cameras within the area following the hit-and-run, police added.

The suspect will next appear in court on April 4, according to court records obtained by The Mercury News.
