Oak Ridge Community Band presents 'Sounds of Spring' on Sunday

Oak Ridge Community Band members have been rehearsing for an exciting “Sounds of Spring” program they will present this Sunday, April 14, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, 1105 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The performance will begin at 3:30 p.m., and as for all the band's concert events, there is no admission fee.

Sunday’s concert will feature a variety of numbers ranging from James Bond to “Rocky Top!”

Among the songs will be Samuel Hazo’s “Solas Ane” (Gaelic: Yesterday’s Joy); a trio of Percy Grainger numbers with “Country Gardens,” “Irish Tune from County Derry,” and “Molly on the Shore”; plus a medley of numbers featuring Stephen Bulla’s arrangement of “Bond … James Bond” with “Nobody Does It Better,” “Goldfinger,” “Live and Let Die,” and “Skyfall.”

The audience will also hear “Young Person’s Guide to John Williams,” featuring such movie tune greats as “Theme from E.T.,” “Hedwig’s Theme,” “Raiders March,” and “Prologue from Hook.”

Other numbers on Sunday’s program are Gary Gilroy’s “The Sphinx,” Andrew Glover’s arrangement of “Under the Double Eagle,” and a recently written tune published in 2022 by Christina Huss titled “Bamboo Warrior.”

The Community Band is directed by conductor Shaun Salem and meets every Thursday evening for rehearsals at the First Baptist Church. After this Sunday’s performance, the band will begin rehearsals for its first outdoor concert of 2024 to be held on Memorial Day at A.K. Bissell Park.
