How did Adam Brody end up playing Seth in The O.C.?

On an episode of the Just for Variety podcast, Brody discussed the process of auditioning to be on The O.C. The actor noted that he didn’t want to read for Seth originally, preferring the character of Ryan. Despite this, he was asked to read for Seth after the audition, though Brody ended up enjoying reading with Ben McKenzie, who had gotten the part of Ryan.

“I auditioned for Ryan,” Brody revealed. “I didn’t want … they wanted me to read for Seth, and I said, ‘No, thanks. I’ll be this guy.’ [Laughs]. And then, he [Patrick Rush, casting director] is like, ‘Great, can you read for Seth now?’ I remember that. And then flash-forward to testing, and I read Ben [McKenzie] already had the part and I read with him, and I liked him a lot. And the room felt real good. I mean, I felt like I had it. I felt real comfortable, you know? That’s what I remember.”

Originally released in 2003, The O.C. told the story of a group of friends in Orange County, California. The series starred Peter Gallagher, Kelly Rowen, Ben McKenzie, Mischa Barton, Adam Brody, and more and was a hit for Fox when it aired, becoming one of the most popular dramas of the mid-2000s. The series is widely known for being a pop cultural phenomenon and ran for four seasons before ending in 2007.
