NYFW: Cynthia Rowley and a mermaid skirt for Spring 2018

Cynthia Rowley was ready to swing into spring for next season's ready to wear collection.

For the designer's Spring 2018 line, the creatives invited both the media and the public into their West Village showroom -- a bright, garage-like space -- to view the pieces. Blasting music welcomed in the crowd, which had formed from down the block and around the corner, to a room of models swinging from the ceiling.

16 models stood swaying into the crowd as cameras made their way around the venue. Some airborne models were dressed in wetsuit-like ensembles, with figure-tight material clinging to their skin. Other models sported bandeaus, beach dresses and one-pieces, ready to dive into the ocean.

Though based in New York, Rowley views the ocean as her escape, an inspiration behind her ready-to-wear collection.

"It's no secret that aside from my work, surfing is something I do happily for hours on end. The sea is my outlet and I catch myself thinking of tales of Aphrodite and how she was created from the ocean itself," she explained.

One of the most mesmerizing pieces of the collection was a fantastical reflective mermaid-like skirt: Colorful scales took over the models legs and shimmered as she took to the swing. The fairy-tale like image truly provided an escape for media-goers from the city.

"I wanted to bring that sense to the city - the sand at dusk, its warm reflection from the sun's rays before it cools under the moon, the wetsuit as my second skin allowing me to feel bare in the water's tide - and decided that nude is the color of the night. Swimwear, but for the city - I imagined the same soft glow falling from New York lights, on silk silhouettes, and the collection as the escape from it all," she maintained.
