Following a compelling first season exposing the self-help MLM turned sex-trafficking cult NXIVM, HBO’s docuseries The Vow is returning for Part 2 this fall. Ahead of its release date on October 17th, the cable network has shared a teaser trailer.

Partially centering around NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman, Part 2 of The Vow is set against the backdrop of the federal trial against Keith Raniere. According to a press release from HBO, it “offers an exclusive view into Raniere’s innermost circle, including NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman. It follows the legal and emotional journeys of the group’s founders, supporters, and defectors as new evidence and stunning revelations come to light, while federal prosecutors and defense attorneys battle with opposing views of justice in a case caught in the national spotlight.”

In the teaser, news clips of the hunt for Raniere before his March 2018 arrest in Mexico are played before Salzman offers a brief explanation of her side of the story. “Imagine you spent 22 years trying to build something,” she says, “but everybody thinks it’s the devil’s work.”

Elsewhere in the trailer, one person claims Raniere’s “intent was never about doing anything good for any woman” while another makes a case for his innocence. Meanwhile, there is chilling audio of Raniere’s words interspersed throughout. “By being able to do the most distasteful of activities, you’re going to be the agent of change,” he says at one point.

In June 2019, Raniere was found guilty of crimes including racketeering, sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy, identity theft, and production and possession of child pornography. After a delay of more than a year due to COVID, Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in prison and fined $1.75 million. He was later ordered to pay $3.46 million in restitution to 21 people.

Former Smallville star Allison Mack, who served as Raniere’s “second in command,” received a three-year prison sentence in June 2021 due to her cooperation with the case.

The Vow Part Two will span six hour-long episodes and premiere on October 17th at 9:00 p.m. ET. Subsequent episodes will air on a weekly release schedule.
