In 2019, Clare Bronfman, the financier of NXIVM, pleaded guilty to charges stemming from her role in the enabling of the corrupt cult-like organization. Esquire reported that in October 2017, a New York Times exposé revealed NXIVM’s secret crimes against women, including slavery.

Bronfman, the Seagram heiress, was one of the co-conspirators in the federal case around the group’s founder, Keith Raniere. According to CNN, her crimes included identity theft and harboring people who were not in the US legally for financial gain. Meanwhile, Raniere faced sex trafficking, racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child, and human trafficking charges, which resulted in his conviction.

However, Bronfman’s sentencing was for the two charges she pleaded guilty to in April 2019. The following September, a district judge sentenced her to more than six years in federal prison.

According to the Federal Department of Corrections, Clare Bronfman is currently serving her sentence in FDC Philadelphia. The records also mention her potential release date, i.e., June 29, 2025. She had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to conceal and harbor people who were not in the US legally for financial gain, along with fraudulent use of identification.

On September 30, 2020, US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis sentenced Bronfman to six years and nine months in federal prison. Her sentence was based on the two charges she pleaded guilty to in April 2019. The same counts stemmed from the federal case that investigated NXIVM and the group’s founder, Keith Raniere. CNN stated that it in Raniere’s conviction on racketeering and human trafficking, among other charges.

Judge Garaufis also clarified that “she [Clare Bronfman] was not convicted of racketeering, sex trafficking, and other charges as Raniere was. He further stated that her crimes “were committed in connection with her role in Nxivm and her close relationship with Raniere.”

The outlet also mentioned that four other co-conspirators pleaded guilty to racketeering charges in the case. Like the Seagram heiress, these four defendants were also high-ranking members of the organization.

A more detailed version of the case against Clare Bronfman and NXIVM recently featured in an episode of Rich & Shameless on ID.
