The answer to the question of why is Valak (portrayed by Bonnie Aarons in The Nun duology) evil is pretty simple. Valak is evil because it’s its nature to be so. As explained by Father Burke in The Nun, Valak was once an angel. The story didn’t explain what Valak did to lose his status as a celestial being, mentioning only that he was sent to Hell by St. Michael the Archangel.

When the Duke who built the Cârța Monastery evoked it, Valak came to Earth for the first time. The Vatican forces then sealed the demon thanks to the Blood of Christ for many years. During World War II, some bombs freed the demon from its prison. In The Conjuring Universe, Valak made its first appearance in The Conjuring 2, revealing itself as the over-arching villain of the franchise.
