The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton spent two days working on a top-secret project, away from the public eye — and we now know the nature of her work. This royal mom of three has been working in a maternity ward of a London hospital, shadowing the staff to become further educated about children’s early development.

The Duchess’ projects were revealed by the palace itself after the fact, according to People. The Court Circular publishes a list of daily activities, and it announced on Thursday: “The Duchess of Cambridge, Joint Patron, the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, today completed two days with Kingston Hospital Maternity Unit in London.”

Kids’ early development is a major theme to which Middleton has devoted a lot of her royal work — and according to People, the Duchess organized a group last year to educate her on child welfare so that she could learn more about their parents’ and caregivers’ challenges.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the Royal Variety Performance at the Palladium Theatre in London. The annual Royal Variety Performance is held in aid of the Royal Variety Charity, of which Her Majesty The Queen is Patron. Thanking that group earlier this year, she said, “Through our work, you have reaffirmed my belief of just how timely it is to focus on what happens in the early years of life, and how pivotal a stage of life this is for a child’s future.”

She added, “I hope my long-term commitment to working in the early years will help make a difference over a generational timescale. Your thoughts and advice will continue to be hugely valuable as I shape my thinking for the years ahead.”
