Downtown Augusta's Imperial Theatre has received a $30,000 grant to acquire and install a new sound system.

One of Augusta’s oldest downtown theaters has been awarded historic preservation funds to install a brand-new sound system.

The Imperial Theatre, 749 Broad St., plans to use the $30,000 grant to purchase and install new sound equipment for the performing arts venue that first opened in Augusta as a vaudeville theater in 1918.

The Fox Theatre, through its Fox Theatre Institute outreach organization, provides annual funding to help shore up financial shortages for historic theaters in Georgia and throughout the South, and provides preservation mentoring through FTI’s community engagement programs.

The newest grant marks the fourth time that the Imperial has secured an FTI grant. A similar grant for the Imperial in 2018 paid for more than $40,000 of work to repair, paint and glaze deteriorating plaster work, including the plaster reliefs depicting Dionysus, the Greek god of revelry, above the Imperial’s box seats.

Since 2008, the Fox Theatre has awarded more than $3.2 million to more than 57 historic theatres in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina.
