SOUTH BEND — The Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival’s Professional Company production of “Hamlet 50/50” opens Aug. 17 with an opening-night gala and performance and continues through Aug. 27 at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

Adapted as part of the 50/50 Shakespeare Project, “Hamlet 50/50” is designed to bring a new level of balance and equity to the workplace of Shakespeare production. Where other productions have had female actors playing male roles, “Hamlet 50/50” takes a different route, offering a 50/50 balance of lines between male and female characters.

Written between 1599 and 1602, “Hamlet” takes place two months after the death of Hamlet’s father, the king of Denmark.

Even as the son mourns his father’s death, however, his mother, Gertrude, remarries quickly, to Claudius, the new king and Hamlet’s uncle.
