Reactions are mixed to a test screening of Robert EggersNosferatu movie.

According to World of Reel, Eggers’ Nosferatu had an early test screening on September 14, 2023. World of Reel spoke to one audience member who felt “negative” about the movie, though they mentioned the people who they saw the movie with liked it more than they did. “I can see their argument but think it needs a lot of work,” they said.

The viewer detailed, “Early into the movie once you realize that this is a straightforward retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the question quickly becomes: why did someone as talented and creative as Eggers choose to make this? It’s a story that has been told on screen many times by some of our most talented filmmakers. It’s a question the film never quite answers.”

Bill Skargård’s performance as Nosferatu may be “divisive”

The viewer goes on to say there’s “no sense of drama or horror” and the film’s “heightened energy quickly grows exhausting over the course of the extended runtime.” They praised the cinematography and Willem Dafoe’s performance, while also noting Bill Skarsgård’s role as Nosferatu will likely be “divisive.”

“Weirdly, there are sequences that reminded me of Voldemort with Peter Pettigrew and I couldn’t help but imagine Eggers directing the Goblet of Fire ending,” they continued. “Maybe he can direct the HBO Max TV series. That’s how conventional some of these sequences play out.”

According to the viewer, Nosferatu contains a subplot involving possession and a character played by Lily Rose-Depp. “This aspect of the story had varying mileage with viewers,” they explained. “I suspect many will find it underdeveloped but I didn’t mind how they set it up myself. Further developing this aspect might be the key to this Dracula retelling differentiating itself.”

Written and directed by Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman), Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 silent German film of the same name. It also stars Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Simon McBurney, and Ralph Ineson.

Nosferatu does not currently have a set release date.
