The Northeast Tennessee Music Census is underway
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Northeast Tennessee Music Census has officially launched as part of the Northeast Tennessee Music Initiative. The effort aims to bring together local musicians, venues, nonprofits and music industry professionals so they can keep Northeast Tennessee a thriving music scene.
Chief Marketing Officer for the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Research Corporation Dr. Stephen Marshall said the census is like an audit of local people in the music scene–whether it’s compensated or voluntary. Musicians, music educators, professionals and student-musicians are encouraged to take the survey.

“Community partners represent music stores and musicians, but more so city municipalities and tourism groups, different groups that are really interested in the ways and understanding that we can accentuate our region in the sense of music,” he said.
Marshall said after the survey is complete, the research corporation will strategize with the state to find long-term solutions to elevate the region’s music scene.
“And then we’re able to really put together what are the pain points of a region, what are the things that we need to try to find resources for, and then what are ways that we can strategically elevate our region for the amazing music that we have here.”
The census will also help get a sense of what’s going on at live music venues, music stores, sound companies, recording studios and much more. He said so far, many regional organizations invested in music and tourism have participated in the census, but they need more community members to get involved.
“We need to really find ways to support our musicians and our music educators in the region.”
Marshall said more musicians and educators in the music world are needed to take the census survey.
