North Country Trail shelter, The Station Break, moves closer to opening in Darlington

DARLINGTON ― North Country Trail hikers are a step closer to having a safe but rustic overnight place to rest.

Devoted canoeists, kayakers and bicyclists also might want to rest up at The Station Break, a shelter off the Darlington portion of the New England-to-North Dakota trail that travels locally along Little Beaver Creek.

The recently unveiled Station Break name comes from three historic sites/events within the Borough of Darlington: The former railroad station at 710 Market St.; the many residents, businesspeople and churches that participated in the Underground Railroad; and the borough's relay and supply station utilized in the Stagecoach Era.

"The reality is here, a prefab building has been ordered and will be placed on the Borough of Darlington’s lot located at 229 Second St." Benois Walton, secretary-treasurer of The Station Break Committee, said. "This property was obtained through the Beaver County Repository specifically for this purpose, and will be the first of its kind along the North Country Trail."

The Station Break Committee holds its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 12, at the Shed Outlet on Route 51, South Beaver Township. Information on the future plans for this project will be discussed, such as erecting a fence on two sides of the lot, purchasing cameras and solar lighting, modifying the sleeping areas, an outdoor board listing all project donors, a booklet of advertisements for local businesses and what to see and do in the area.

"We invite everyone to become a member at $25 per year, or (spend) some valuable time to work on projects.Donations are very much needed to accomplish our goals."
