Normani took a moment to catch up with Billboard at New York City’s Z100 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Friday (Dec. 7), chatting about recording her new single, working with Pharrell for her upcoming solo album and hitting the road with Ariana Grande.

“It was actually one of the first records I recorded,” Normani says of new song “Waves.” “It just resonated with me. I had this idea of putting 6LACK on it ’cause he’s such an incredible artist. He really did bring the record to life.”

“I think that 2019 is gonna be a really big year in terms of R&B and where music is going,” she continues. “I hope that ‘Waves’ is a representation of what is to come and hopefully I can be part of it.”

Following her time with Fifth Harmony, the singer is looking forward to what’s to come: a solo album and opening Ariana Grande’s Sweetener Tour.

Speaking about her time in the studio, she reveals: “I had a session with Pharrell. It was really dope … He’s hype, especially when he’s feeling a record. He’s just a mastermind. I love seeing the greats at work. Even though it was my session, I was like, ‘I just want to sit back and just watch you do what you do.'”

And when it comes to Grande, she’s got all good things to say. “She’s such an incredible woman … I’m really grateful to spend the next three months with her. She’s such a cool person,” Normani tells Billboard, adding that the pop star’s “Thank U, Next” video is “probably like the best video I’ve seen in all of 2018.”
