Norman movie theater reopens with upgrades after closing during pandemic: What to know

NORMAN — After a multi-year closure, Norman's largest movie theater has reopened with a full slate of films and upgrades.

The refurbished Regal Spotlight, 1100 N Interstate Drive, reopened Friday with a roster of new releases, including the movie musicals "Mean Girls," "Wonka" and "The Color Purple;" the action vehicle "The Beekeeper;" the DC superhero sequel "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom;" the Bible-based movie "The Book of Clarence;" the horror-thriller "Night Swim;" the fact-based wrestling drama "The Iron Claw;" the romantic comedy "Anyone But You;" the animated adventure "Migration;" and the 2020 Pixar animated Oscar winner "Soul."

Part of Regal Theatres — one of the largest cinema chains in the country — the Norman theater had been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic, which shuttered movie houses from coast to coast in spring 2020. Norman's Regal Spotlight and the Regal Warren Moore 4DX & IMAX reopened in August 2020 only to close again with the rest of the chain in October 2020.

While the Regal Warren theaters in Moore and Midwest City finally reopened in 2021, the Norman Regal Spotlight remained closed.

“Staff are so excited to welcome back former guests and new friends to Norman’s best place to watch a movie,” said Regal Spotlight General Manager McKayla Collins in an email to The Oklahoman. “Every detail of our refurb was focused on improving the comfort and customer experience for every visitor to this location.”

Avantika plays Karen Shetty, Renee Rapp plays Regina George, Bebe Wood plays Gretchen Wieners and Angourie Rice plays Cady Heron in "Mean Girls".

What upgrades have been made to Norman's Regal Spotlight movie theater?

Among the new amenities, all 14 auditoriums at Norman's Regal Spotlight now boast recliner seating and have been equipped with the latest laser projection technology and sound enhancements, according to the email.

The theater also is introducing the ScreenX premium format, offering what's billed as an immersive, 270-degree, panoramic moviegoing experience.

Plus, the Regal Spotlight now features an updated the concession stand with increased food and drink offerings and added bar service for craft beer and wine, along with an expanded gaming area where moviegoers can socialize before and after a show.

The reopening of the Regal Spotlight expands the number of locations in the Oklahoma City area where subscribers can use their Regal Unlimited perks.

It also brings a second movie theater to Oklahoma's third largest city, along with the AMC Robinson Crossing 6.
