Noah has kept his relationship with his twin largely private over the years — several followers even expressed shock that he’s a twin in the comments of his Instagram post. However, he was candid about the role Chloe played in his coming-out journey.

In an interview with Variety in August, he revealed that she was the first person he told that he was gay. “I can’t tell anyone else before I tell my own twin sister — she’ll kill me,” he said.

The actual act of coming out — even to his twin — proved daunting.

“I was driving, and I just kept putting it off. Our house was right down the road, and she was like, ‘Why do you keep making these wrong turns?’ I was like, ‘I can’t do it, I can’t do it.’ Then we got home, and I was like, ‘Screw it,’” he said.

Chloe’s reaction was more than supportive. Noah said she was “ecstatic” at the news.

“She said that she would’ve hated the idea of me marrying another girl and having to compete with that girl for my attention. The fact that now it’ll be a guy, she was like, ‘Oh, he’ll be my best friend.’”

As for what pushed him to come out, the actor said it was a mix of his Stranger Things character’s influence and the beginning of his college experience.

Of realizing he was gay after starting school at Penn last year, he recalled, “All these new girls were starting to hit on me, and I was like, ‘I don’t like this. I don’t want this,’” he says. “I was like, ‘Holy s---. I know now.’”

The release of season 4 of the Netflix series was another push for Noah to come out, as the sexuality of his character, Will Byers, was clear for the first time.

"Once I did fully embrace that Will was gay, it was just an exponential speed towards accepting it for myself," he told the outlet. "I would be in a completely different place if I didn’t have Will to portray, and to embrace and help me accept myself."

He added, "I think if I never played that character, I probably would still be closeted."
