No pressure: Texas A&M gives Jimbo Fisher a national title plaque with a blank date
In case you were still unsure of how badly Texas A&M wants to win a football national title, take a look at what new coach Jimbo Fisher got from the A&M system chancellor earlier this month.
At an event that included honoring Texas A&M-Commerce coach Colby Carthel with a plaque commemorating the team’s 2017 Division II National Championship, Texas A&M chancellor John Sharp gave Fisher a plaque for his still-nonexistent national title with the school.
The school published the video of the presentation on Wednesday.
“We have sort of the same thing that we gave Colby. It says here Jimbo Fisher, head football coach, NCAA Division I football national championship Texas A&M University,” Sharp said as the audience started to laugh. “The only difference between Colby’s and yours is you get to fill in the date.”
Fisher was quick on his feet.
“I hope I fill in a couple,” he cracked.
Texas A&M has won three national titles but the last came in 1939. If A&M doesn’t win the title in 2018, the 2019 season will mark 80 years since the most recent championship.
Fisher won the 2013 BCS National Championship at Florida State and left the Seminoles at the end of the 2017 season for Texas A&M after the Aggies gave him a 10-year contract worth $75 million. It’s indisputable that Fisher is going to be a very rich man thanks to the Aggies. His future happiness with his job and employer very well may not be if he doesn’t win a title or two.
