No. 1 pick Myles Garrett to make debut for Browns after sprained ankle

Cleveland Browns fans who are looking for something – anything – to kickstart the team this season will get it on Sunday.

Myles Garrett, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, will make his NFL debut as the Browns face the New York Jets. Garrett suffered a high ankle sprain in practice on Sept. 6, just days before the regular-season opener, after a teammate fell on him during a drill.

But Garrett has been practicing – defensive coordinator Gregg Williams believes Garrett could have played last week, but Cleveland was being cautious – and the team is hyping his first game, already tweeting a photo on Sunday of Garrett’s No. 95 Browns jersey pulled over his shoulder pads and helmet, both waiting for him in his locker stall:

During an interview posted on the Browns website this week, the pass-rusher out of Texas A&M said he wanted to play in Week 2 or Week 3, but knew it was best to follow trainers’ advice. His parents and sister will be in the stands at FirstEnergy Stadium, and his brother, Sean Williams, who is in Turkey playing professional basketball, will be watching too.

“I’m just trying to keep focused, not really trying to worry too much about the game,” Garrett said. “I’m just keeping to my routine, studying up on the opponent and just keeping my mind off that. Not letting it stress me. When I get there, don’t be part of the moment; live in the moment.”

The worst part of being injured, he said, was “just not being of any value. I haven’t been able to help much. I’ve been over there supporting and trying to tell them what I can about what I’ve seen and how to get off the line or what they’re doing to affect them or get them off their game. Now I can actually get in the game and show what I can do, show what I’ve learned.”

The Browns can use the help on defense; they’ve given up 31 points in each of their last two games, and opposing quarterbacks are completing over 73 percent of their passes; as a team, Cleveland has nine sacks.
