NMSP investigate another fatal officer involved shooting in Santa Fe

Jun. 24—SANTA FE, N.M. — A second officer involved shooting resulting in a fatality within a 24-hour period occurred in Santa Fe, this time involving a Santa Fe County Sheriff's deputy.

According to a NMSP news release, New Mexico State Police said the shooting occurred about 11 p.m. Wednesday when deputies were attempting to make a traffic stop on a black Ford Ranger pickup truck believed to have been stolen. The driver of the Ranger led officers on a pursuit that lasted several minutes and ended when the Ranger stopped at the intersection of Siler Road and Rufina Court, where a Java Joe's coffee shop is located.

"A male suspect got out of the vehicle, pointed a black handgun at the deputies. Deputies fired at the suspect, striking him," the news release says.

The suspect died at the scene. His identity will not be released until next of kin are notified.

No officers were hurt and their names will not be released until after they have been interviewed about the incident, state police said.

Earlier in the day, deputies "encountered" the suspected stolen Ranger, the release says. The driver of the pickup attempted to ram a Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office patrol unit with the vehicle. Deputies chased the truck but the pursuit was eventually called off, the release says.

On Wednesday, Santa Fe police shot and killed an armed man in the downtown area. The latest shooting occurred off Cerrillos Road blocks away from the popular Meow Wolf entertainment venue.
