Nkechi Okoro Carroll (‘Found’ showrunner): ‘How far is too far to save a life?’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

“How far is too far to save a life?” declares Nkechi Okoro Carroll about the dark twists and turns on her new crime drama “Found.” For our recent webchat she adds, “that is a question that our character struggles with on an episodic basis,’ noting that when “you’re faced with your demons head on, what do you do?” We talked with Okoro Carroll as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&A event with 2023/2024 awards contenders. In NBC’s “Found,” Shanola Hampton stars as Gabi Mosley, a recovery specialist who works with her crisis management team to find missing people overlooked by the system. A kidnapping victim herself as a teenage girl, Gabi has secretly kidnapped the man who abducted her, Hugh “Sir” Evans (Mark Paul Gosselaar) locking him up in her basement to use his knowledge as a kidnapper and criminal to help her solve cases. The missing persons crime procedural was created by Okoro Carroll, who also serves as showrunner, and co-stars Kelli Williams (“The Practice”), Brett Dalton, Gabrielle Walsh, Arlen Escarpeta and Karan Oberoi.
“I love TV,” Okoro Carroll says when talking about the immediacy of bringing stories about forgotten people to life. “I grew up watching a lot of TV and the twists and the unexpected, those were the things I always loved. And so I knew the show I wanted to make, but I was like, what is that thing that sets it apart that will keep people tuning in every week? I realized I wanted to tell a story that was as much about sort of recovery from trauma when healing goes right, which is a significant portion of the cast on the show,” she explains, adding that it is also about “the recovery from trauma when the healing doesn’t quite take and that ends up being our heroine it’s that’s Gabi’s story.”
