Nile Theater celebrates ribbon cutting & grand reopening

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Nile Theater celebrated its ribbon cutting and grand reopening Thursday morning.

Originally opened as the Bakersfield Opera House in 1906, Fox West Coast Theaters then completely rebuilt it in 1938 with an “Art Deco meets Streamline Moderne exterior” that’s still visible today.

A gift from Cynthia Lake allowed the the Fox Theater Foundation to purchase the Nile Theater last year and has been operating it as a performance and event venue.

“We’re still learning about the history, and the past that this building has had, and we’re really eager to make it as beautiful as it can be, make it as much of an asset to our community as it can be, and restore it the best that we can,” President of the Fox Theater Foundation Corrine Coats said.

Some of those restoration plans include restoring an original 1930s mural inside and the return of neon lights outside.
