Six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams will find herself back in the awards conversation again in 2024. The actress, whose most recent Academy Award nomination came in 2019 for the film “Vice,” stars in the new movie “Nightbitch” from writer-director Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”). On Friday, Searchlight set “Nightbitch” on its release calendar for December 6.

Based on the book by Rachel Yoder, “Nightbitch” is about a woman who “pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon her domesticity takes a surreal turn.” Amazon provides a more detailed description of Yoder’s novel, for those who are interested:

More from GoldDerby

An ambitious mother puts her art career on hold to stay at home with her newborn son, but the experience does not match her imagination. Two years later, she steps into the bathroom for a break from her toddler’s demands, only to discover a dense patch of hair on the back of her neck. In the mirror, her canines suddenly look sharper than she remembers. Her husband, who travels for work five days a week, casually dismisses her fears from faraway hotel rooms.

As the mother’s symptoms intensify, and her temptation to give in to her new dog impulses peak, she struggles to keep her alter-canine-identity secret. Seeking a cure at the library, she discovers the mysterious academic tome which becomes her bible, A Field Guide to Magical Women: A Mythical Ethnography, and meets a group of mommies involved in a multilevel-marketing scheme who may also be more than what they seem.

Adams is frequently considered “due” for Oscar recognition. She was first nominated at the 2006 Oscars in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Junebug.” She has received four other Best Supporting Actress nominations since then, for “Doubt,” “The Fighter,” “The Master,” and the previously mentioned “Vice.” Adams’s only Best Actress nomination came in 2014 for “American Hustle.” She was famously snubbed in 2017 in the Best Actress race for “Arrival.”

“Nightbitch” is one of several potential awards contenders coming this year from Searchlight Pictures, including Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Kinds of Kindness” (June 21) and Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” (October 18).

“Nightbitch” is out in theaters on December 6.
