Nicole Kidman To Receive Palm Springs’ International Star Award For ‘Lion’
The Palm Springs International Film Festival has named Nicole Kidman as the recipient of its 2017 International Star Award, recognizing her performance in The Weinstein Co’s Lion. Kidman previously received Palm Springs’ Chairman’s Award in 2005. In the Garth Davis-helmed Lion, the Oscar and Golden Globe winner plays Sue Brierley, an Australian woman who adopts two young boys from India.
The 28th edition of Palm Springs, another important step on the awards season circuit, holds its Awards Gala on January 2. Chairman Harold Matzner today called Kidman “One of the world’s most luminous and versatile actresses” who has “filled so many unforgettable roles including her performances in The Hours, Moulin Rouge!, Cold Mountain, Rabbit Hole and dozens more.” In Lion, “she gives yet another award-worthy performance.”
The film, based on the astonishing true tale A Long Way Home about Saroo Brierley’s childhood and his adult search for his biological family, opened at the top of the Thanksgiving Specialty box office with a $128,368 Friday to Sunday at four New York and Los Angeles locations for the frame’s highest per-theater average. It goes wider December 9. Lion earlier debuted in Toronto where it was the first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award.
