Nicole Kidman opens up about losing two babies during marriage to Tom Cruise: 'That's massive grief'

It’s been more than 25 years since Nicole Kidman had an ectopic pregnancy, but it seems that the pain is still just as raw.

In a heart-wrenching interview with British society magazine Tatler, the mother of four opened up about the grief she felt after losing her first child at age 23, and why she feels the devastating topic is still treated as taboo.

Kidman, now 50, was newly married to first husband Tom Cruise when she learned her pregnancy was ectopic, which is when a fertilized egg is implanted outside the womb. A second pregnancy near the end of the couple’s marriage resulted in a miscarriage.

“I know the yearning,” the Australian actress told the magazine. “That yearning. It’s a huge, aching yearning. And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That’s massive grief to certain women.”

“There’s an enormous amount of pain and an enormous amount of joy on the other side of it,” she said, describing the feeling of finally becoming a parent. “The flip side of going through so much yearning and pain to get there is the feeling of ‘Ahhhh!’ when you have the child.”

After splitting from Cruise and marrying country singer Keith Urban in 2006, the actress went on to have two daughters, Sunday Rose, 9, and Faith Margaret, 7. Faith was born via a surrogate.
